Yes, I shoot FILM......and Digital!

FILM....Beautiful FILM!

The first time I shot a Medium Format Camera I was in LOVE.  The Light, texture and range....a richness unmatched by digital.

Don't get me wrong...I shoot digital as well but I prefer FILM.

After ten years of shooting film, digital became the BUZZ.  I was reluctant to make the switch.  I waited until Nikon came out with a Full-Frame DSLR and then I quietly bought in.

I wrestled with the question, "Why am I giving up FILM?"  It's not BROKEN.

Clients were requesting Digital but I knew Film was better so I made the decision to stay with Film until I could no longer purchase it.  In all my years as a photographer-- it is still the best decision I have ever made.  I thought it was of great importance that I verse myself with Digital so that I could make an informed decision.

Reasons I LOVE working with FILM.

1. Focus.  I am able to stay focused when shooting film.  I do not have the luxury of checking my LCD Screen after every shot and this is a GOOD THING.  When you interrupt your shoot you lose your momentum, you disengage from your subject, and often you have just missed "THE SHOT" you were looking for.  You know how some of the best photo moments happen in between frames...well.....you are always ready for that moment when shooting film.

2. Christmas Morning.  Every time I pick up my photos it's like "Christmas Morning".  I have a bit of a ritual...I pick up my photos from Tom @ Toronto Black & White ( we chat for 30 minutes or so....about Photography and life ),  I drive to a coffee shop or my gallery and slowly peruse my images.  All my editing is done in 30 minutes....another reason I love Film, less time in front of a computer screen and more time behind the camera.

3. Permanence.  B&W has proven itself over 100 years.  You will always be able to scan a negative.  Digital Files are recorded on what medium? From Floppy Disc, CD, DVD, Memory Cards....Digital medium is constantly changing.
4. The Final Print.  Fiber-based prints have stood the test of time.

Over the next few weeks I will feature my favorite Black & White Film Images from 2010.

8mm Video - Kieran Heilbron

A refreshingly creative break from the traditional wedding video

Kat & Chap, my out of town Texas Twosome were looking for a videographer for their July 31st, Toronto Hunt Club Wedding. Since we were shooting Film they wanted a videographer that would shoot 8mm video. That's where Kieran Heilbron came in! Kieran's creative and keen eye captured the day perfectly. Kat & Chap gave Kieran artistic freedom right down to choosing the perfect song! In a world of short attention spans this is the perfect piece to share with family and friends! Enjoy!
